An Innovative Explorer Post Allows Youth to Test Drive Mechanical Talents

An Innovative Explorer Post Allows Youth to Test Drive Mechanical Talents

What’s the difference between cars from 1916 and 2016? Major updates in technology, that’s what!

Automotive technology is advancing quickly and now that vehicles are commonly equipped with computers, careers in this industry require a new skill set. Members of an innovative Explorer post in Honolulu, Hawaii are ready to master these modern mechanics to get a head start on their future.

After seeing the success of BSA’s Exploring programs within the fire and law enforcement fields, Eagle Scout Mark Benson decided to use his expertise to serve both his community and his industry.

Benson is the president of a local car dealership and he knows the next generation of automotive experts must be skilled professionals with a tech-savvy edge.

“Today the bulk of the work is done with computers. We need kids with a great work ethic and a great mind,” Benson explained to Automotive News.

Last year, Benson collaborated with the Aloha Council to form a new Explorer post. The program introduces local teens to automotive service careers by taking a modern approach on the classic trade.

Twice each month, the Explorers receive specialized hands-on training with real cars in Benson’s shop. Working directly with licensed professionals, the teens learn to apply new technology to age-old techniques.

“We want to show them that repairing the cars isn’t about a hammer and tools anymore. It involves computers, which they’re comfortable with,” Benson shared with Automotive News.

From parking assistance to smartphone compatibility, computers are incorporated into everyday automotive use. Getting under the hood of a modern car now requires an understanding of computer technology and these Honolulu youths are ready to explore their potential!
