Eagle Scout Climber Matt Moniz Aids Relief Operations on Everest

Eagle Scout Matt Moniz had plans to summit Mt.Everest for the first time last year, yet after an avalanche tore through the Himalayas, he was forced to cancel. This year he decided to make attempt number two. However, history seems to have repeated itself once again on Saturday in the wake of Nepal’s most horrific earthquake since 1935.

While stationed at the Mount Everest Advanced Base Camp, Matt survived the quake’s subsequent avalanche that rumbled through his camp causing major destruction and several stranded and injured victims. Fortunately, Matt is safe and able to aid in the rescue efforts.

“He arrived at Everest Base Camp just a few hours before the earthquake and avalanche. Thankfully, he was able to take shelter behind a large boulder and was shielded from the powder blast,” said his father Mike of the 17-year-old. “The last 36 hours, have been brutal, he has been involved with extensive rescue operations.”

Learn more about Matt’s relief efforts and where he will be air-lifted next over on The Scouting Newsroom.
