Farewell to Gary Butler, BSA’s Deputy Chief Scout Executive and Chief Operating Officer

Gary Butler, Deputy Chief Scout Executive and chief operating officer will be retiring at the end of this month, effective December 31, 2015.

Gary, a Distinguished Eagle Scout, began his Scouting career in 1980 as a district executive in Long Island, N.Y. Over the course of his accomplished career with the Boy Scouts of America, Gary served as Scout Executive in three councils and joined the National Council in 2005. After serving as Assistant Chief Scout Executive since 2009, he was promoted to his current post in December 2013.

When he joined the National Service Center, he was tasked with working with volunteers and staff to bring solutions to Scouting’s challenges. Gary is widely respected for his unique skill set in strategic planning and organizational management and his innovative approach to problem solving.

“Above all, I have grown to appreciate his professional integrity and commitment to Scouting’s mission,” said Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh.
