The Outdoor #HandbookHack You Must Know: How to Build a Campfire

Today is National S’mores Day! And what better way to celebrate than with a bite full of chocolate, gooey goodness? Any s’more aficionado (or Scout) will tell you the most authentic way to prepare this quintessential camping treat is over a campfire.

However, campout desserts aren’t the only reason to equip yourself with proper campfire know-how. By learning how to safely build a fire, you can Be Prepared for a multitude of scenarios in the outdoors.

Check out our latest #HandbookHacks video below, then head to page 388 of the Boy Scout Handbook 13th Edition to learn how to build a blaze that’s usable, safe, and kind to the environment.

Safety First!

Keep yourself and others safe by taking responsibility for every fire you build. Always remember to:

  • Find out ahead of time if fires are permitted, or if there is a burn ban in the area you plan to build your campfire.
  • Try to find a pre-existing campfire area.
  • Keep an eye on your campfire at all times.
  • Extinguish every fire when you’re done.

Have you perfected your fire-building skills? Share your favorite campfire memory in the comments!
