Matt Dukeman takes his place as Director of Order of the Arrow this November. With an impressive Scouting background and a passion for the life-changing values emphasized in Order of the Arrow, Matt brings a focus on leadership development to the position.
But where did his passion for Order of the Arrow begin? Find out in our 5 Questions series below!
What’s most exciting about taking on the role of Director of the Order of the Arrow?
Matt: I have been a member of the Order of the Arrow since I was 13 years old and have served in various leadership roles from chapter chief to section chief and adviser to staff adviser. The OA is what kept me in Scouting as a youth and has changed my life in ways I would have never imagined. I am excited to have the opportunity to help bring this great program to more young people and to be able to foster the important leadership development that our great volunteers help us achieve.
What’s your Scouting background?
Matt: I am an Eagle Scout with three palms. I grew up in Eureka, California, and was a member of Troop 27. My father and my brother are both Eagle Scouts. During my time in Scouting, I served on various camp staffs, including six summers on the Philmont staff. Basically, I have lived and breathed Scouting my entire life.
How is Order of the Arrow significant to the Scouting experience?
Matt: The Order of the Arrow embodies several important parts of Scouting. We are dedicated to the outdoors and to society as a whole. We believe in being a servant leader, promoting the outdoors, and building leadership skills within young people. We are in harmony with the Scout Oath and Law. Many of the same things Scouting does, but we put extra emphasis on these items.
What’s your favorite Scouting memory?
Matt: My favorite Scouting memory was when I was a participant of OA Trail Crew at Philmont in 1995. Near the end of our trip, our crew watched the sunrise from the top of Mt Baldy. I was freezing but it was –and still is – one of the most inspiring things I have ever been a part of.
And, most important, what’s your go-to campout food?
Matt: I am a huge fan of pancakes when I am backpacking or camping. It’s a little extra work but always a treat after a long day!
