Help Lead the Shift to a Sustainable Future for the BSA
For more than a century, the Boy Scouts of America has been a leader in conservation education and environmental stewardship. Sustainability goes hand-in-hand with being a good Scout. Reducing what we consume and recycling, repurposing, restoring, and repairing what we own all are parts of being thrifty — a key point of the Scout Law. Even so, shifting to sustainable actions can seem overwhelming. That’s where the LeaderSHIFT Forum and the Sustainable Properties Conference comes in.
Planned for October 24–25 at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center in Orange, California, the LeaderSHIFT Forum and the Sustainable Properties Conference will focus on “Practical sustainability: How to position your council as a leader in your community, grow revenue, and operate in a more efficient manner.”
There are two ways to participate in this important event:
Option 1 – Host a Local LeaderSHIFT Event and Participate via Livestream
Every council can participate in the LeaderSHIFT Forum on Tuesday, October 25 via Livestream. Last year, more than 60 councils participated in this live event by hosting professional staff, volunteers, and local sustainability enthusiasts. The program is designed for local participation and will generate a number of ideas and actionable items for your local council. LeaderSHIFT will be hosted by BSA National Sustainability Director John F. Stewart and, in just four short hours, you’ll walk away with the passion, knowledge, and resources to become a sustainability leader. The live broadcast will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern/8 a.m. Pacific and conclude at 3 p.m. Eastern/noon Pacific
Option 2 – Attend the Entire Conference in Person
Join us in person at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center, a 210-acre outdoor education center owned and operated by the Orange County Council. In addition to participating in the LeaderSHIFT Forum, professionals and volunteer leaders can participate in the Sustainable Properties Conference led by the BSA’s Properties Department. No pie-in-the-sky ideals — just practical, uncomplicated, day-to-day tweaks. This hands-on, activity-based conference will demonstrate how simple it is to lead the evolution to sustainability in your life, the practices of your council, and/or on your property. The Sustainable Properties Conference will begin at noon on Monday October 24 and conclude on October 25 at 5 p.m.
