When Logan S. earned the Eagle Scout rank at age 15, it was clear he would reach incredible heights. Yet unlike most Eagle Scouts, Logan isn’t just wowing his community at ground level – he’s literally soaring like an Eagle.

Logan, now 17, is one of the youngest pilots in Mississippi after earning his pilot’s license in September. He says Scouting spurred his interest for the art of flight at an early age.

“I’ve always been interested in aviation,” said the Eagle Scout to the Hattiesburg American. “I got interested in it because of the Scouts and I just knew this is something I wanted to pursue and make it part of my life. It’s pretty amazing now.”

Logan logged 40 hours of training to earn his pilot’s license. Half of the hours were with an instructor, while the other half were completed by flying solo. Logan’s flight instructor Glenn Pace says it took the Eagle about 18 months to finish the training requirements.

Scout Training Kicks Into Gear

Not every flight was smooth sailing – but with his Scout training in mind, he kept his cool under pressure.

“He handled this incident when he was flying by himself where the door came off while he was flying,” Pace explained. “He handled it very well and didn’t freak out. He’s very easy to work with and dedicated to what he does. It’s nice to see him when he comes by and rents a plane to take up. He’s a very good kid.”

Logan hasn’t let his passion for flight get in the way of his other commitments. He’s also juggling a full senior year schedule and devotes much of his time to his Boy Scout Troop. In addition to achieving the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle Scout, he’s also earned the High-Adventure Triple Crown Award.

“Triple Crown is a big achievement, spending over 300 nights in camps across the country,” said Freddy, Logan’s troop leader and father. “I’m proud of everything he has accomplished because of how committed he is to the Scouts.”

Logan spearheaded a community service project to earn Eagle and also mentored 28 other Scouts on their path to the rank. Logan’s father says his son has encouraged many Scouts to work hard and shoot for the stars.

“I feel it is a real honor to be able to serve and help others,” Logan shared. “I like to help people out whenever I can. Just seeing how I can affect someone else’s life makes it all worth it in the end.”

Logan plans to continue charging toward his dreams, full speed ahead. He’s been accepted into the Louisiana Tech Flight School ROTC program and hopes to make flying a lifetime career.
