Why This Mom Enjoyed Her First Cub Scout Rally As Much As Her Son Did

199x300This summer, a Cub Scout Pack in the Sam Houston Area Council hosted a back-to-school event and invited local parents to bring their sons for an afternoon of regatta-themed adventure.

Rachel, a mom blogger and creator of A Southern Fairytale, was not quite sure what to expect when she and her son arrived at the rally. Her brother participated in Scouting when Rachel was a child, but she doesn’t remember much more than a Pinewood Derby and a Tiger Cub cake.

At the event, Rachel watched her son interact with other boys, play games, and build his own sailboat to race in a mini regatta. The activities made quite an exciting afternoon for Rachel’s son, and she enjoyed watching him participate.

The mom blogger heard firsthand how Scouting has a positive impact on both boys and parents. She spoke to mothers, fathers, and Scouts who all commended the program.

One Scout told her, “I like that I get to learn things that they don’t teach us in school, and we get to really get our hands into things and do it… not just sit and read about it.”

Scouting gives youth unique opportunities to cultivate life skills, but also provides outlets for self-expression and ingenuity.

Rachel recalls reading the Scout Law at the event, and explains in her blog that she has since noticed boys involved with Scouting exhibiting the attributes in the Scout Law.

At the Cub Scout event, Rachel discovered for herself the benefits of Scouting, and her son looks forward to perhaps beginning his own Scouting adventures very soon.
