Join the Scouting Celebration That’s a Century in the Making

Even as we continue on the trail toward Scouting’s future, there are times when we should stop, look back and see how far we’ve come.

That’s the exciting premise behind “A Century of Honor,” the special celebration of Scouting on Tuesday, Oct. 29, hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1913, the LDS church became one of the BSA’s first national chartered organizations, and this event celebrates a partnership that has only grown stronger over the past 100 years of Scouting.

The multimedia “A Century of Honor” performance, broadcast live from Salt Lake City, will feature original music, historical reenactments, special guests and a cast of hundreds of Scouts. It comes to you from the 21,000-seat Conference Center, home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. And it’s sure to be spectacular.

Make plans to watch beginning at 9 p.m. EDT (8 p.m. CDT, 7 p.m. MDT, 6 p.m. PDT) on Oct. 29. If you’re busy that night, the show will be rebroadcast the following day and later made available for downloading so you can watch it any time.

I’m most excited about the live broadcast on Oct. 29, because councils and districts across the U.S. have teamed with leaders from the LDS church to plan watch parties at LDS Stake Centers or elsewhere in the council. That means Scouts, Scouters and non-Scouts can gather to watch the broadcast and learn more about the BSA and its rich history. The events are open to families of any faith, not just our LDS families.

If you can’t make one of those events or there isn’t one nearby, I’m encouraging you to organize your own viewing party with your pack, troop, team or crew — or to watch the broadcast online at home. All you need is a computer. Don’t just invite the Scouts in your unit; invite prospective Scouts. They’ll get an exciting peek into the world of Scouting and see why, with partners like the LDS church, the BSA has thrived for more than 100 years.

To learn more about the event, visit www.scouts100.lds.org. And please share this link on your unit website and on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and elsewhere to encourage Scouts and non-Scouts to participate on Oct. 29.

With chartered partners like the LDS church, we’ve come a long way in the Boy Scouts of America. And events like “A Century of Honor” offer proof that the life-changing opportunities Scouting provides for young people have only just begun.
