Scouting’s Best Moments are Still Ahead
Welcome to Chief’s Corner! I’m Wayne Brock, Chief Scout Executive for the Boy Scouts of America, and I’m really looking forward to this cyber-exchange of ideas. I’ve found that social media is a great tool for reaching out to folks who want to hear more about how we serve America’s young people. My hope is that this blog will help bring you closer to Scouting and understand what we’re all about. At the same time, I hope to learn a few things!
We have a lot to look forward to. In just a couple of weeks, we’ll be kicking off the 2013 National Scout Jamboree while introducing our new Jamboree home – The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia, our newest and fourth High Adventure Base.
You’ll hear more about The Summit later, but it’s a big deal for Scouting. We can’t wait to get this next chapter of Scouting underway and see the first Scouts hike their way into The Summit’s many outdoor adventures. It’s a great addition to our existing three High Adventure Bases plus the terrific local camping programs our councils provide.
We are eternally grateful to the many people who have supported the construction and launch of The Summit. They are sending a message to America that Scouting is as relevant as ever.
That commitment to Scouting is important for many reasons. We’ve just cleared a major hurdle in redefining our membership standards that was the subject of much debate. Now we are moving forward to broaden Scouting’s opportunities for outdoor adventures, service and leadership, youth-to-adult development, and healthy kids – that’s our focus.
What are your thoughts about the future of Scouting? I’d like to hear your ideas so we can provide a quality Scouting experience for as many young people as we can. Your voice is important.
More soon!
