Washington Post Highlights Signs, Signals, and Codes Merit Badge

Washington Post Highlights Signs, Signals, and Codes Merit Badge

Have you seen Washington Post columnist John Kelly’s feature on the Signs, Signals, and Codes merit badge?

The column covers how a nostalgia craze is bringing back the classics: think hipster beards, vinyl, and coffeehouses galore. The BSA’s newest merit badge is a major contributor to vintage-chic as it smuggles in a smattering of old-school signaling.

The merit badge’s aim isn’t to be on trend, however. It’s to prepare kids for situations where their digital devices might fail them. The merit badge also challenges Scouts to utilize widely used signaling, like America Sign Language and, oh yeah, emojis!

Learn more about the badge on Scouting.org or by checking out the Washington Post article.
